Importance of Symbols in Religion

Symbols are an essential part of religion because they help convey deeper and more spiritual messages. In Pixar's movie Cars (2006), there is three different uses of symbols that have been conveyed, those being the Piston Cup, The King, and Route 66. These represent symbols similar to those taught in religious teachings, focusing on finding oneself, transformation, and possessing ethical behavior. In many religions, objects can be viewed as things that distract people from what matters truly. Lighting McQueen had a strong sense of pride and attachment to winning, but was able to work through his differences, allowing himself to grow as an individual. Disney and Pixar have incorporated various ways in which symbols can convey broad meanings related to religion and beliefs in their movies. "Symbols are a way to communicate meaning, sometimes in a way that evokes an emotional response. Disney, through immersive experiences and repetition, has created a world full of symbols." (Fisher, 2022, p. 48)

Piston Cup

The Piston Cup is a symbol that is evidently used in the movie, which helps to relate to religion. The Piston Cup helps represent Lightning McQueen's obsession with winning, fame, and striving for his own success. While the piston cup started off the movie as being the only thing that Lightning cared for, he later discovered that there is more to life than an "empty cup." The Piston Cup is an example of an achievement that brings temporary satisfaction, but no lasting meaning. The sense of pride that comes with winning is what Lightning is obsessed with; focusing solely on achievements can lead to emptiness and broken relationships. It was evident in the movie that McQueen gave up his chance to win the Piston Cup for a better cause.

The King

The reason Lightning McQueen gave up his Piston Cup wasn't due to not wanting to achieve a personal goal, but rather to help others in need, have a spiritual turning point, and grow as a character, allowing The King to finish his final race ever.
 
The winner of the race was getting the sponsership from The Kings "Dinaco", as he will be moving on from racing. As this was something McQueen had dreamt about throughout the movie, he was able to put his selfishness aside and do what he felt was best. The King clearly became a symbol of selflessness and compassion, allowing Lightning to develop spiritually. By allowing The King to finish his final race, he gets to finish with dignity and honor, showing a reflection of staying faithful and having perseverance. 
 
McQueen thinks back to Doc and how his racing career ended, and finds the purpose to prevent another veteran racer at the top of his game from going down without finishing his last race.

Route 66

Route 66 symbols are slowing down and learning the importance of appreciating life. In Cars, McQueen leaves a very hectic and fast-paced life and ends up in a small town on Route 66. It is a symbol of the journey of life, as it was what enabled McQueen to learn about personal growth and gain wisdom from the experience, all of which occurred because he accidentally found himself on Route 66. Learning about the value of the past, traditions, and sacred histories plays a considerable role in religion. The idea of Radiator Springs is that it is a sacred place, preserving the values of older generations that today's society has slowly forgotten. The concept of community and connection through helping one another and hospitality is key in religion, teaching that community is a central aspect of life.
